Waiting On The Other Side
Read about a family’s journey as they support a loved one through incarceration, rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.
This story reflects the general processes and support available to families of inmates. It does not depict a specific family. Experiences, arrangements and support may vary according to individual needs and circumstances.
When someone goes to prison, the journey affects not only the person in prison, but also the family outside. For families unfamiliar with prison processes, it is natural to have questions or feel uncertain about what happens next.
This journey explains what families may experience, how they can stay connected and where they can find support.

Chapter 1 - When Everything Changed
When my loved one entered prison, I did not know what to expect. The prison environment and processes were unfamiliar, and I had many questions about what would happen next.
There were difficult emotions to work through. I was also concerned about my loved one and how our family would cope and adjust.
The choices made had consequences, but our family lives changed too.
“My loved one was the one entering prison, but our whole family had to learn how life would be different.”

Chapter 2 - Staying Connected
At first, I had to learn new ways of staying connected. I had to understand how visits and e-letters worked, and what I needed to do.
Visits and e-letters became moments we looked forward to. Even when our conversations were brief, simply seeing my loved one and sharing what was happening at home reminded us that we were still part of each other's lives.
“You don't realise how much the ordinary conversations matter until you can't have them whenever you want.”

Chapter 3 - Learning to Trust Again
Supporting my loved one did not mean forgetting what had happened. We had difficult conversations about the choices made, the impact on our family and what would need to be different moving forward.
Over time, our conversations became less about leaving prison and more about the changes my loved one hoped to make.
“I wanted to believe that things could be different. But rebuilding trust would take time and consistent actions.”

Chapter 4 - Preparing for His Return
As the next stage of my loved one's journey approached, I felt hopeful but also uncertain. I wondered how my loved one would adjust, find work, manage old influences and rebuild relationships.
Our family also needed to prepare for the changes ahead and consider how we could provide support while allowing my loved one to take responsibility for the way forward.
“I had looked forward to this next step, but I also realised that our family would need time to adjust.”
Release and Community-Based Programme arrangements differ according to each inmate’s circumstances. Inmates and their families will be informed of the relevant arrangements when these are confirmed.

Chapter 5 - Starting Again in The Community
Returning to the community did not mean that everything immediately returned to normal.
My loved one had to adjust to responsibilities, relationships and everyday pressures. As a family, we also has to learn how to provide support while allowing my loved one to make his own decisions and take responsibility for the way forward.
There were good days and difficult ones, but over time, we began building a new routine.
“Returning to the community happened in one day. Rebuilding our lives took time.”
